What are Sexually Transmitted Infections?

STIs are infections that are usually picked up during sexual contact and there are several pathogens that can result in sexual health infections. The pathogens include bacteria, viruses and parasites. Singapore’s NCID has reported that the top 5 STIs diagnosed locally are infections from Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes Simplex Virus and Non-Gonococcal Urethritis. There are other important ones as well such as Syphilis, Trichomoniasis, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections. Certain STIs can also be transmitted from the mother to the child as well.

The management of STIs vary depending on the pathogen, the severity of disease and comorbidities among many other factors. Some STIs can be cured while some have no cures but can be managed. Early intervention is always important for any disease.
